.First attempt to manufacture aluminium in India was started when Aluminium Corporation of India was formed in 1937. But its first venture to produce aluminium was delayed. Meanwhile, Indian Aluminium Company started its production at Aluminium in Kerala.
To give a moral as well as financial boost to the industry, the Government announced in 1940 several facilities including import tax exemption and imposition of heavy duty on imported aluminium. Finally, Aluminium Corporation of India was able to start its production at Jaykeynagar. For further development of the industry, tariff commission at last extended full protection in 1960 to aluminium production.
In 1958, Hindustan Aluminium Corporation was incorporated. This company constructed a giant plant at Renukot in Uttar Pradesh which started production in 1962. Subsequently new plants were set up at Madras (1965), Korba of Madhya Pradesh and Koyna of Maharashtra, Hirakud of Orissa etc.
