Helen's father, Arthur H. Keller was most loving and indulgent, devoted to him home, seldom leaving his family except during hunting season. She remembered his caressing touch as he led her from tree to tree, vine to vine, and his eager delight in whatever pleased his daughter. He was a famou story-teller and after Helen had acquired language, he used to spell clumsily into her hand his cleverest anecdotes. Nothing pleased him more than to have her repeat them at an opportune moment.
Helen was in the North, enjoying the summer of 1896 when she received the news of her father's death. He had had a short ilnnes and there had been a brief time of acute suffering before it was all over. His death was Helen's first great sorrow, her first personal experience with death and the loss of a loved one was unbearable for her.
