The Chipko movement started in Garhwal region of present Uttarakhand in 1870s.Women and men in this region came together to protest against the indiscriminate felling of trees by the contractors.They were opposed to the use of forests for comercial gains .Gradually, the protest turned into a movement.The government imposed a 15 year ban on felling green trees in the Himalayan forests.
