The general characteristics of the vertebrates ( or chordata ) are as follows :

(1) Body of this animal is triploblastic , coelomate with bilateral symmetry .

(2) All of them have a notochord.

Notochord is a rod like support structure that runs along the back of the animal separating the nervous tissue from the gut. It provides site for muscle attachment.

(3) They have dorsal nerve cord and paired Gill pouches.

(4) A post –anal tail present at some stage of life.

(5) Complete digestive system is present.

(6) Ventral heart is present with dorsal and ventral blood vessels and closed blood vascular system.
