- A major step was taken in 1986 by the Indian government with the enactment of Consumer Protection Act known as COPRA.
- In 2005, the right to information act was passed. This enabled the citizens to know about the functioning of various government departments.
- Under the copra, a three tier quasi judicial system was set up in district , state and national level for the redressal of consumer disputes.
- In case of any violation of consumer rights or unfair trading practices consumers can seek remedy thru these courts. If the case is dismissed by one level of court the consumer can appeal to the next nevel.
