● Vulcanization of rubber(how it's done) :
This process is carried out by heating a mixture of raw rubber with sulphur and an appropriate additive at a temperature change between 373 K to 415 K.
During this process, sulphur forms cross links at the reactive sites of double bonds and thus the rubber gets stiffened.
● Purpose of vulcanization of rubber :
Natural rubber (not vulcanized) becomes soft and brittle below 283 K and shows high water absorption capabilities.
Natural rubber is soluble in non-polar solvents and is non-resistant to attack by oxidizing agents. Therefore, in order to improve these physical properties, vulcanization of rubber is carried out.
