• In 1813 ,the British Parliament passed the Charter Act for the promotion of education in India. The British Parliament granted one lakh rupees for education.
• A General Committee of public instruction was appointed to look after the development of education in India in 1823. There arouse debate regarding what should be the medium of Instruction between the two groups-the Anglicists and the Orientalists. The Anglicists wanted english should be the medium of instruction whereas the Orientalists wanted vernacular language to be used as medium of instruction .
