Poetic justice is a literary device by which things happen in a narrative the way they are supposed to, that is, the triumph of good over evil, and punishment for the cruel. In King Lear, the characters end up receiving some sort of punishment making them better people at some level. Edmund is regretful of his actions on his deathbed and even tries to save Cordelia. Lear and Gloucester become morally improved people.
