1. The Doctrine of Lapse- Dalhousie was the Governor-General of India from 1846-1856. The Doctrine meant that when a ruler of dependent state died without a natural heir, the State passed back to the English company. Dalhousie claimed that heirs adopted without the consent of the Company could not inherit only the private property of the deceased ruler and not his territory.
2.Discourtesy to the Mughal Emperor- The Mughal Ruler, Bahadur Shah Zafar, had in those days a title only, in fact he was not at all powerful. But even that as devalued when Lord Dalhousie announced that on the death of the King his successor would have to leave the Imperial palace. Later Lord Canning made it known that Bahadur's successors would not be allowed to use titles like 'King'. Such a discourtesy to the Mughals hurt people's sentiments considerably.
