Answer:

Although random sampling is generally the preferred survey method, few people doing surveys use it because of prohibitive costs; i.e., the method requires numbering each member of the survey population, whereas nonrandom sampling involves taking every nth member.

Answer:

Random Sampling

  • Random Sampling is the method where the individual units from the population are selected at random.
  • Every individual has an equal chance of being selected.
  • This method is also called lottery method.

eg: The government wants to determine the impact of the rise in petrol price on the household budget of a particular locality. For this a representative (random) sample of 30 households has been taken form the 300 households of that locality. The means of all the 300 households has been are written on the paper and mixed, then 30 names to be interviewed are selected one by one.

Non-Random Sampling

  • Non-Random Sampling is the method where all the units of the population don't have equal chance of being selected.
  • The convenience or judgement of the investigator plays an important role in the selection of samples.
  • This method is also known as non-probability sampling method.

eg: There may be a situation that you have to select 10 out of 100 households in a locality. You may select the households conveniently situated or households know to you or your friends. In this case, you are using your judgement.
