The stratification of a plant community is the result of long selection and adaptation processes. Through the formation of different layers a givenhabitat is better utilized. Strongly vertically stratified habitats are very stable ecosystems.

Vertical layering of the habitat or the arrangement of vegetation is called as stratification in forest ecosystem it is the term from the field of ecology.

The plants in the forests grow according to the different heights and each layer is a habitat of different species of animals.    

The layers are called as floor, herbaceous, shrub, understory and canopy.
