Soliloquies means talking to himself aloud when a person is alone or is suppose to be alone, In the play it means that the talking on the part of the character regardless of the presence of the hearers.

It is always assumed that the character is talking to himself, but the truth is that he is addressing the audience in front of him.

We find Elizabethan dramatists including the great shake spear, making varied use of this significant technique, so the function of soliloquy  may be manifold.

It can be used to provide information about the incidents that happened in the past.

It may also be used to tell about some thoughts or feelings that developed in the past.

As in the case of Faustus soliloquy it nicely sums up his life and growth of his ideas that took place before the action that are going to the stage.

Soliloquy also enables one to understand the motives of a character.

Sometime soliloquy may also reveal a deep experience or a typical state of mind with all its wavering and inner conflicts, it may also reveal the moral underling a play as we find in the case of Shakespeare's Othello and that of Marlowe's  Faustus in the last scene.
