Ranbir Singh was the third son of Maharaja Gulab Singh. He was assended the throne in August 1854 till 1885.
Maharaja Ranbir Singh was a Persian Scholar. He tried to eradicate the illitracy from the state and promtion of education recieved due attention.
He encrouraged religious education through the study of classical languages such as - Persian; Arabic and Sanskrit. Maharaja Ranbir Singh believed in providing education for all classes of its subjects and fiunded afew state institutiins like Raghunath Temple Pathshala; other schools; a library and Ranbir Press in 1882.
Maharaja Ranbir Singh had a semi-formal education and was passionate about passing on knowledge to the poor.
Ranbir Singh met and conversed with intellectuals from diverse fields regularly. Ranbir Singh followed in the footsteps of earlier rulers of Kashmir, Zain-ul-Abidin, and Avantivarman. To translate and transliterate religious literature, he used pandits and maulvis. He pledged $100,000 to the University of Punjab founded in 1882. In gratitude, he was named the university's first fellow.
