BIOLOGICAL NITROGEN FIXATION (BNF)
BNF occurs when atmospheric 'nitrogen' is converted to ammonia by an enzyme called a nitrogenase. Many 'Nitrogen-fixing' organisms exist only in anaerobic conditions, respiring to draw down oxygen levels, the oxygen with a protein such as leghemoglobin.
