rinderpest arrived in africa in late 1880 's. it was carried by infectional cattle imported from britain. entering africa in eas,rinderpest moved west 'like forest fire ' reaching africa 's atlantic coast in1892. it reached tip of africa i.e. cape 5 yrs later. rinderpest killed 90 % of cattle
the loss of cattle destroyed african livlihoods. planters, mine owners and colonial govt.s now successfuly monopolised what scarce cattle resouces remained to strengthen their power to force africans into labour market. control over scarce resource of cattle enabled european colonisers to conquer and subdue africa.
