Demonstrations, rallies and vandalizing of liquor shops or brewing units have become a regular affair in the state. Intellectuals, civil society members and social organizations have taken to the streets several times this year.
Let alone rural areas, people of the capital city have also started agitating against sale of liquor. Sunday's two-hour road blockade in the city reflected the pent-up anger among the people against the liquor sale. Residents of Sikharchandi blocked the busy Nandankanan Road by placing a body of a man, who allegedly died after consuming liquor late on Saturday.
This is not the only case in the city. On June 12, a group of women armed with lathis and stones ransacked a liquor shop near Naharkanta village on the outskirts of the city. They had demanded closure of liquor shops immediately.
