The Vijayanagara Empire was very much a Kannada empire. Another name for the empire was Karnata Empire. After the Battle of Talikota in 1565, when Tirumala Deva Raya re-established the empire and started ruling from Penukonda, he was hailed as the “Reviver of the Decadent Karnata Empire”. Out of the 7000 inscriptions that have been found of the Vijayanagara Empire, about half of them are in Kannada and the remaining are in Telugu, Tamil, and Sanskrit. The Vijayanagara Empire was clearly a Kannada empire. Of course the Tuluva dynasty as the name suggests was of Tuluva origin.

However, there is nothing wrong if Telugus claim it as their own. In fact, every Indian must claim it as their own. Why? Because it was the greatest Indian empire in medieval history. Every Indian must associate himself/herself with the Vijayanagara Empire. Medieval India was a dark place and the failure to transition from the medieval era to the modern era was what that led to the decline of India and why the British and other colonial powers were able to assert themselves on the Indian soil. In this dark era filled with wars, the Vijayanagara Empire was a shining bright spark. It was that rare exception in which everything, right from culture to literature thrived.

Every Indian must claim Vijayanagara Empire as his/her own. The day when Indians start associating themselves with the Vijayanagara Empire will be the day when true history will be taught in our schools and not the hogwash that is being taught currently which is why so many people in India are not even aware about the Vijayanagara Empire. The day when Vijayanagara will become synonymous with medieval Indian history will be the day when true history will be known to Indians.
