In the story, "The Rattrap"; Selma Hagerloft targets the materialistic approach of the people. She says that the worldly riches have dillusionalized the people. They are running after temporary materials. She calls the world a "rattrap" that is capturing people into running after things that would not last for long.

She also discusses how people have neglected their emotional needs for this materialistic world. She says that man has become lonely and unhappy as it keeps running a race it was never meant for.

She shows a spark of optimism as she believes that man being misguided right now. Whenever the people decide to walk the right path they will become happy, empathetic and social. She believes that with the correct guidance, life can get rid of the rattrap.
