(1).First generation computer(1940 - 1956):-
a) This computer use vacuum tubes and magnetic drums for the memory.
b) It occupy a lot of space.
c) It were very expensive to operate.
d) It uses lot of electricity and generated lot of heat.
For eg. ENIAC , EDVAC and UNIVAC 1.

(2).Second generation computer (1956 - 1963):-
a).This computer used transistors and magnetic core memory.
b).This computer is smaller and faster in comparison to first generation computer.
c).They were cheaper than the first generation.
For eg. UNIVAS III , IBM 1401 ,IBM 700.

(3).Third generation computer (1964 -1971) :-
a).This computer use Integrated Circuits (ICs).
b).They were faster and efficient than second generation computer.
c).For the first time, these computers were made available to the general public because they were smaller and cheaper compared to computers of earlier generation.
d).These computers use operating system ,allowing many different applications to run at one time.
e).The users communicated with the computers using keyboard and monitors.
For eg. UNIVAC 900 series , IBM 360

(4).Fourth generation computer ( 1972- Present):-
a). These computers use very large scale integration (VLSI) and ultra large scale integration (ULSI) that could fit thousands of components into a single chip.
b).They are smaller ,energy efficient and more reliable than the earlier generation.
c).They are extremely powerful and can process million of instructions in a fraction of seconds.
d).The present day computers can be linked together to form computer networks. This led the development world wide network called the internet.
For eg. Desktop computer.

(5).Fifth generation computer ( Present and Beyond):-
These computers will be based on artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence is the branch of computer science that deals with making the computers think and take decisions like human beings.
For eg. computer robots.
