Answer:

Lord Dalhousie arrived in India as the Governor-General in 1848. He implemented his policy of annexation as the 'Doctrine of Lapse'. Under this Doctrine, when the ruler of a protected state died without having a natural heir, his state was not supposed to be transferred to the adopted heir.

Till then this was actually the age-old tradition of the country. But under the new regime, such states were to be amalgamated into the British empire. eg. Jhansi, Satara, Nagpur was annexed in the British empire.

The Rapid expansion of British territories in India around the mid 19th century was only possible due to Lord Dalhousie's policies.

DOCTRINE OF LAPSE: Lord Dalhousie applied the policy of doctrine of lapse according to which a dependent state would pass into British hands if the ruler died without a natural heir. Contrary to age-old Hindu and Islamic it denied adopted children the right to inherit The throne, Satara (1848), Sambalpur (1849), Udaipur (1852), Nagpur (1853), and Jhansi (1854 ) were all annexed under this policy.
