People's perception:
It is an important factor determining social division. When people perceive their identity as singular and exclusively. It leads to more social division and violence whereas when people start to see their identities as multiple and complimentary to national idenity. The feeling of national integration arises
Example:People in Northern Ireland saw themselves as only Catholic or, Protestant, which leads to differences and it became difficult to reconcile.Similary, India is a multi-cultural country, the feeling of nationalism binds us together.
2.Role of community and culture:
It depends on the demands raised by political leaders of any community. If the demands can be easily accommodate within the constitutional framework and without costing another community. The feeling of harmony develops otherwise it leads to social division
Example:The demand for ‘only Sinhala’ was at the cost of the identity and interest of the community of Tamil in Sri Lanka.
3.The role of political party and government:
It depends on the reaction of government on demands of different communities or groups. However it should be noted that in democracy it is healthy and normal to have political expression of social division.
Examples:In Belgium and Sri Lanka it is observed that if the rulers are willing to share some powers and accommodate reasonable demands of the minority community, the problem of social divisions become less hostile for the country. But if in the name of national integration or unity such demands tried to be suppress, it resulted into threat for for the country.
