While moving from top to bottom, theres successive addition of shells down the group, increasing the atomic volume in this way, the father the electron is from nucleus, the more shells come in between the valence electrons and nucleus, or in other words the more intermediate electrons come in between the valence electrons and nucleus,
Greater number of intermediate electrons will cause a greater screening effect, (ie shielding effect) so down the group shielding effect increases
