Five causes of deforestation in Indiaduring the British rule were: a. The British considered forests as wildernesses which must be broughtunder cultivation to enhance theincome of the state. Thus, large tracts of forest lands were cleared for cultivating land.

The five causes are:-
a)Forest was distroyed to supply sleepers for railway and to further expand areas under railway.

b)The colonial government thought forest as unproductive and hence clear them for building dams and laying down cities.

c)cash crops were expected to bring huge revenue. so large area of natural forest
