Dams are being opposed by local communities for the following reasons.

1. Local communities are concerned about their rehabilitation as they are likely to be displaced due to the construction of the dam. The building of a dam and the associated reservoir requires large amounts of land. As a result, people in surrounding areas are required to give up their land for the dam. This causes resentment as people have been living on those lands for generations and their lives and livelihood are intimately connected with that land.

2. Moreover, governments have often been insincere in the past in providing adequate rehabilitation to the displaced people. Governments in the past have failed to provide adequate amounts of compensation and resettlement in good quality land to the displaced people.

3 Local communities also fear that dams may suffer damage during earthquake. If that happens. the surrounding areas would be inundated leading to immense loss of life
