Because displacement has both direction and magnitude but distance has only magnitude.
example: As we move from our home to shop and back from shop to home displacement is zero but distance is not zero
Therefore the distance can be zero only if the object remains at rest.

displacement is the shortest path covered by a object .
distance is total path covered by a object.
for ex-
a object moves forward 1m and then get back to starting point . here the displacement is zero but distance is 2m .
