Displacement is the shortest distance between two points. The path followed may not always determine the shortest way to reach the final point.
Let us take an example:
A ---------------------- C ---------------------- B
If a car travelled from A to B and then came back to point C, the displacement will only be the distance between A and C. The path of the car here does not effect the displacement.
If the car would have returned from C back to A, the displacement will be zero. Displacement is always measured in terms of it's initial and final position only.
