The original definition of a kilometre was 1/10,000 of the distance from the equator to the North Pole, but measurements have improved. Easy, there are 90 degrees of distance from the equator to the North Pole. Each degree has 60 minutes, each minute = 1 nautical mile, therefore 60 x 90 = 5,400 nautical miles.
