Distant hybridization and role of biotechnology in crop improvement:

1. The need for producing so many varieties of different crop plants is to attract more consumers.

2. The branch of science that deals with crop improvement is called biotechnology.

3. The methods of crop variety improvement are hybridisation, genetic engineering etc.

4. Hybridization is the process by which two dissimilar plants with desired characteristics are mated or crossed. The resultant plant will have the characteristics of both the parent plants. For example one plant shows good disease resistance and the other plant produces good yield. Hence by interbreeding we can get a plant which is both resistance to diseases and produces good yield. It therefore helps in crop improvement.
