Alcohols have an -O-H bond, ketones have a -C=O bond, amines have an -N-H bond and so on. ... For acetone, it is the C=O stretch, which, after consulting the table lies within 1680–1740 1/cm. See the peak there? Notice that it is missing from the ethanol spectrum!

Heat with K2Cr2O7/H2SO4. Ethanol will turn the orange K2Cr2O7 green while acetone remains orange. Effervescence will be seen for ethanol, while no effervescence will be seen with acetone.
