The main difference between a bar magnet and a solenoid is that while the former does not require electricity for its magnetic property, the latter exhibits magnetic property only when an electric current is passed through its coil.

A bar magnet is a simple, rectangular-shaped magnet made usually of a material that has a natural magnetic field around it (ferromagnetic) like iron, nickel etc. A solenoid consists of a coil that is wound into a tightly packed helix and it generates a controlled magnetic field when electricity is passed through it.
