Distinguish between baking powder and baking soda. Why is baking powder

Baking soda is used in recipes that also include acidic ingredient, such as cream of tartar, butter milk , or citrus juice.Conversely, Baking powder is typically is used when the recipe doesn't feature an acidic ingredient, as the powder already includes the acid needed to produce carbon dioxide.

The chemical formula of baking powder is sodium hydrogenate(NaHCO3); where as that of washing soda is sodium carbonate (Na2CO3.10H2O).

Sodium hydrogencarbonate on heating gives CO2 gas which will turn lime water milky whereas no such gas is obtained from sodium carbonate.
