The following are the distinguishing features between the biodegradable and non-biodegradable substances:

Explanation:

  • The biodegradable substances can be degraded by the living organisms like soil microbes but the non-biodegradable substances cannot be degraded by the microbes.
  • The biodegradable substances do not get accumulated in the environment whereas the non-biodegradable substances accumulate in the environment as they are not decomposed by the microbes.
  • The biodegradable substances pollute the environment by causing air pollution the non-biodegradable substances pollute the environment by causing soil and water pollution.

The two effects of biodegradable and non-biodegradable substances is as follows:

Biodegradable substances:

  • These produce foul smell gases due to the decomposition of the organic waste from the living organisms.
  • These substances are the breeding hub for flies and insects which may infect the humans and animals.

Non-biodegradable substances:

  • These get accumulated in the water and soil and may cause biomagnification.
  • These enter in the food chain and remain undigested in the animals which results in increase in mortality of animals.
