C3 pathway involves set of carbon reactions which are catalysed by the enzyme Rubisco to synthesise 3 carbon compound, 3-phosphoglycerate from 5-carbon compound, Ribulose bisphosphate.

C4 pathway also involves carbon fixation to synthesise 4 carbon compound Oxaloacetic acid. C4 pathway occurs only in some plants to prevent loss of energy by photorespiration.

1. First stable compound in C3 pathway is 3-carbon compound while that is 4-carbon compound in C4 pathway.
2. C3 pathway involves single carbon fixation while C4 pathway involves double carbon fixation.
3. C3 pathway is found in all plants while C4 pathway is found in certain plants called C4 plants.
4. C3 pathway is saturated by sunlight while C4 pathway is not saturated.
