cacl2 is calcium chloride and zncl2 is zinc chloride

sbasu222: I meant that if both the compounds are kept side by side, how will you know which one is which?

Hello there,

To distinguish between the two solutions of Zinc Chloride (ZnCl2) and Calcium Chloride (CaCl2), we can use the following methods:-

1. By adding Ammonium Hydroxide solution (NH4OH) to both the given salt solutions, we will observe a gelatinous white precipitate of Zinc Hydroxide (ZnOH) in case of Zinc Chloride , while, no such observations i.e no precipitate will form in case of Calcium Chloride solution.

2. If we take anhydrous salt samples, then by simply keeping the two salts for a while, we will observe that a saturated solution of CaCl2 has formed, since CaCl2 is a deliquescent substance, while no such observations will be made in case of ZnCl2, in the span if time compared to CaCl2, i.e CaCl2 will form a saturated solution faster than ZnCl2.

However, I recommend that step 1 is a better experiment to distinguish between the two salts
