The distance on the map is smaller than the corresponding distance on the ground. But the map always bears a definite proportion to the mapped area. The scale indicates the proportion which a distance between two points on a map bears to the distance between the corresponding points on the actual ground.

If distance on the map is 5cm then, on ground it's
1cm= 1 000 000 so, it will 5×100= 5 000 000
