✒Sial is composed of silicon and aluminium. It is upper layer which forms a discontinuous cover over the Earth's crust and is entirely absent the ocean floor. Sima is composed of silicon and magnesium. This is the second layer below sial which forms the ocean base.

✒Sial refers to the earth's crusts upper layer, it is made up of rocks abundant in silicate and aluminium based minerals. ... Sima is the earth's crusts lower layer and contains rocks with an abundance of magnesium silicate minerals, the word Sima is an amalgam of the first two letters of Magnesium and Silica.

The main mineral constituents of the Continental mass are silica and alumina. It is called sial ( si-silica and al-alumina ). the oceanic crust mainly consists of silica and magnesium thus called sima (si-silica and ma-magnesium ).
