- Why is the study of history important?
- IT IS OFTEN THE CASE that great leaders were also great students of history. One such example was Winston Churchill: not only did he read history, he wrote about it and it in turn helped to shape his leadership. However, there is often a neglected deeper research into history and this too impacts current thinking and events. David Crabtree explained the link between knowledge of the past and the present. He wrote: "History is important because it helps us to understand the present. If we will listen to what history has to say, we can come to a sound understanding of the past that will tell us much about the problems we now face. If we refuse to listen to history, we will find ourselves fabricating a past that reinforces our understanding of current problems." (1)
- History is often taken too lightly, but a deep investigation and understanding of history can and will leave a lasting mark. Crabtree not only wrote about understanding which comes from the deep knowledge of history, but also informs humanity, organisations and individuals about values, he stated: "History teaches values. If it is true history, it teaches true values; if it is pseudo-history, it teaches false values." (2)
- It is, therefore, concerning to see that many organisations inform their values and practices on pseudo-history and not the "true history" developed from historical inquiry. While researching historical works with a Salvation Army focus, it can be seen that there are a number of problems or issues within this existing knowledge. As Crabtree stressed, there is a need to learn the truth from the past to gain true values. Professional historians, as well as students of history find much of the works of the past in connection with The Salvation Army unsubstantiated, which creates a feeling that often the information has been invented rather than the true and accurate story told.
- In an attempt to research areas within The Salvation Army historians are confronted with some major issues, which can impede the collection of data and in turn fabricating a past to reinforce the present rather than to change the future. There have been four major difficulties I have recently experienced when researching the SAGALA (Salvation Army Guards and Legion Activities) movement. Firstly, on the whole there is little information found on some subject matter; it has either been lost or has remained only in the hands of individuals. Secondly, there have been differences and sometimes large discrepancies between information, e.g. the official recognition and the actual commencements dates of programs. Thirdly, there is a gap between people's individual memories and official documentation. Finally, although some publications or manuals and guides can be sources, there are many occasions when the publication year is not listed or documented.
Studying history is important because it allows us to understand our past, which in turn allows us to understand our present. If we want to know how and why our world is the way it is today, we have to look to history for answers. People often say that “history repeats itself,” but if we study the successes and failures of the past, we may, ideally, be able to learn from our mistakes and avoid repeating them in the future. Studying history can provide us with insight into our cultures of origin as well as cultures with which we might be less familiar, thereby increasing cross-cultural awareness and understanding.....
