Distinguish between tensile stress and compressive stress

Consider a rectangular bar subjected to an external force (F) in outward direction as shown in the figure. Such kind of force experienced by the rectangular bar is called tensile force. Now the ratio of  force(F) applied exposed  to the cross sectional area gives us the quantity of tensile stress.

When an object is applied with tensile force, the cross sectional area of the object reduces but the length of the object increases.

When we apply a compressive  force to any object its cross sectional area increases but the length of the object decreases. This force is applied in inward  direction.
