Writ of prohibition is defined as the  writ which the law prohibit to stop doing something to a subordinate.

Writ of Certiorari is the basic process of court to seek judicial review of a decision of a lower court.

The only difference between the two is that  writ of prohibition is issued to prevent an inferior court to move forward with the trial of a case in which it has assumed excess of jurisdiction, a writ of certiorari is issued to quash the order passed by an inferior court or tribunal in excess of jurisdiction.
