distance is the actual path traveled by a particle and is a scalar quantity i.e. it can not be negative,whereas displacement is the shortest path traveledand is a vector quantity,it can be negative,zero or even positive.
For example,consider a stone which is thrown to a height of 5 meters,is allowed to reach the ground again.then distance travelled is 10meters but displacement is zero meters.
