It is the actual length of the path covered by a moving object. It is the shortest distancebetween the initial position and the final position of the moving object. ◆ Difference between distance and displacement -

  1. Distance is actual distance covered by moving body on journey while displacement is shortest distance between initial and final position.
  2. Distance is scalar quantity while displacement is vector quantity.
  3. Distance is always more than or equal to displacement of moving object.
  4. Displacement is independent of path while distance changes with change in path.
  5. Distance covered by a moving body is always positive while displacement of moving body can be positive, zero or negative.
