Wastelands are lands which are economically unproductive, ecologically unsuitable and subject to environmental deterioration. The official estimate of wasteland in India in 2004 was nearly 63.85 million ha — more than 20% of the country’s geographical area.
The Technical Task
Group of the Planning Commission was set up on December 3, 1985, to
define and develop a methodology on the status of wastelands in the country.
Following thirteen categories of lands were classified under wastelands in
India.
i. Gullied and/or ravenous land
ii. Upland with or without scrub.
iii. Water logged and marshy land.
iv. Land affected by salinity/alkalinity-coastal /inland.
v. Shifting cultivation area.
vi. Underutilized /degraded notified forest land.
vii. Degraded pastures/grazing land.
viii. Sands-deserted/coastal
ix. Mining-industrial wastelands.
x. Barren rocky/stony waste/ sheet rocky area.
xi. Steep sloping areas.
xii. Snow covered land/or glacial area.
xiii. Degraded land under plantation
