With half of the monsoon season getting over, all parts of Punjab and Haryana have recorded high rainfall deficit this year.
According to the Meteorological Department, Chandigarh has received 242.2 mm rains from June to August 17, recording a rainfall deficit of 58 per cent. During 2013 monsoon, the city had received 825 mm rains against normal rains of 788 mm, with 37 mm surplus monsoon rainfall.
In Haryana, the districts namely Panipat, Rohtak, Bhiwani, Jind, Fatehabad, Kaithal, among others, are badly hit due to the poor monsoon rainfall. Some parts of Haryana have recorded high rain deficit of upto 87 per cent.
The Meteorological Department’s data shows monsoon rainfall shortage of 87 per cent in Rohtak, 77 per cent each in Fatehabad and Panipat, 75 per cent in Kurukshetra, 74 per cent in Sonepat and 72 per cent in Jind. The district Yamuna Nagar recorded least rainfall deficit of 36 per cent followed by 37 per cent in Faridabad and 42 per cent in Ambala.
Similarly, the rainfall deficit of upto 88 per cent was recorded in parts of Punjab from June 1 to August 17. The district with highest rainfall deficit of 88 per cent is Barnala.
Among others, Sangrur recorded rain deficit of 80 per cent, Patiala recorded 79 per cent, Amritsar 78 per cent, Fatehgarh Sahib 76 per cent and Mansa saw a rainfall deficit of 79 per cent. Gurdaspur district recorded a rainfall deficit of 17 per cent.
A Met official said that Punjab has received a total of 136.1 mm rains against normal of 336.1 mm rains during June 1 to August 17 recording a rainfall deficit of 60 per cent during monsoon. Haryana recorded rainfall deficit of 59 per cent receiving 125.1 mm rains against normal of 305.7 mm during this period.
In 2013, Punjab had received 468.4 mm rains against normal of 457.7 mm with two per cent surplus downpour while Haryana had witnessed rain deficit of 27 per cent recording 320.4 mm rains against normal rains of 438.3 mm.
According to the Met Department forecast, rain/thundershowers may occur at some places in Haryana. light rain/thundershowers would occur at a few parts of the State in the next 24 hours.
In Punjab, moderate to heavy rainfall is predicted in some parts. Places namely Amritsar, SAS Nagar, Gurdaspur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Hoshairpur and Roop Nagar districts in Punjab are likely to receive rainfall in the next 48 hours,” said a Met official.
Chandigarh is likely to witness overcast conditions in next 24 hours. Subdued monsoon conditions are prevailing in parts of Punjab and Haryana. The monsoon had reached the region on July 1 and 2.
