aerobic respiration:
1:-) It takes place in presence of oxygen
2:-)Here,complete oxidation of food takes place
3:-)End products are CO2 and H2O
4:-)Lot of energy is liberated
5:-)It occurs in plants and animal cells
anaerobic respiration
1:-)It takes place in absence of O2
2:-)Here, glucose molecule is completely oxidised
3:-)End products are ethyl alcohol or lactic acid or H2O
4:-)Relatively small amount of energy is released
5:-)Occurs in anaerobic bacteria and human cells

Question

distuinguish anaerobic and aerobic respiration

Answer

Aerobic respiration:-

  • In the presence of oxygen,complete oxidation of glucose occur with maximum release of energy.
  • In the first phase of aerobic respiration,a molecule of glucose (6-C) is broken down into two molecules of pyruvic acid (3-C).
  • In the second phase,Molecule of pyruvic acid are completely oxidized (all the C-H bond are break) to CO2 and water (H2O) and all the energy is released.

The overall reaction is as follows:

 \large \bf \red{Equa:-  \: C_{2}H_{12}O_{6} + 6O_{2} \longrightarrow {6CO_{2} + 6H_{2}O + Energy}}

Anaerobic respiration:-

  • In the absence of oxygen,incomplete oxidation of glucose occur with less release of energy.
  • In the first phase of anaerobic respiration is similar to aerobic respiration,a molecule of glucose (6-C) is broken down into two molecules of pyruvic acid (3-C).
  • But in second Phase,pyruvic acid is not completely oxidized due to the absence of oxygen.In this way many C-H bonds are left unbroken in the product.
  • Anaerobic respiration is further classified as Alcoholic fermentation and Lactic acid fermentation.

Alcoholic fermentation:-

  • It occur in bacteria,yeast etc.In this type of anaerobic respiration pyruvic acid is further broken into Alcohol (C2H5OH) and CO2.

 \large \bf \red{Pyruvic \: acid \longrightarrow Ethyl \: Alcohol+Carbon \:  dioxide}

Lactic acid fermentation:-

  • It occurs in skeletal muscles of humans and other animals during extreme physical activities. This also happens in the bacteria present in milk. In tis type of anaerobic respiration, each pyruvic acid molecule is converted into lactic acid(C2H6O3).

 \large \bf \red{Pyruvic \: acid \longrightarrow Lactic \: acid}
