Let the first part be x the second part be (1/3×x-40)

Now,

x+(1/3×x-40) = 400

x + 1/3×x = 400+40

3x+x/3 = 440

x = 440 ×3/4

; x = 330

So, the first part = x = 330

and, the second part = 1/3x-40

=1/3×330-40

=110-40

= 70
