Let the first part be x

Given, the larger part exceeds the smaller part by 12

So, 2nd part => x + 12

A/q,

x + x + 12 = 72

2x + 12 = 72

2x = 72 - 12

2x = 60

x = \dfrac{60}{2}

x = 30

1st part => x => 30

2nd part => x + 12 => 30 + 12 => 42

let the parts be x and y
x + y=72
x =72-y
x= (y+12)
72-y= y+12
72-12=y+y
60=2y
30= y
x=72-30=42
