Diwali' is one of the greatest festivals of Hindus. Diwali is also called as Deepawali. 'Deepawali' in Hindi means a row of diyas.


Diwali is the festival of lights. It falls in the month of 'Kartik' according to Hindu calendar. In Diwali almost every house and street is decorated with lamps, and lights.


It is celebrated when Lord Ram, Sita and Lakshman returned to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. People of Ayodhya welcomed them with lighted oil lamps. That is why it is called the 'Festival of Lights'.


On the day of Diwali everyone looks happy and they greet one another. Children buy toys and crackers. Shops and houses are got clean and painted. At night people worship Lakshmi- Goodess of wealth.

Diwali is called as the festival of lights because we celebrate it by lighting lots of diyas and candles. It is a traditional and cultural festival celebrated by every Hindu all over India and abroad. It is a festival of lights and Hindus celebrate it with joy.

During this festival, people light up their houses and shops with Diyas. During the evening and night people walk around in their towns and cities enjoying the beautiful sight of Diwali.

Diwali celebration lasts for five days and Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world take part in the celebration. The festival, which coincides with the Hindu New Year, celebrates the new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.

According to mythology, the festival of Diwali also commemorates the return of Rama, Sita, Lakshman Hanuman to the kingdom of Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile. During the exile Rama defeated the demons and Ravana the demon king.

The Diwali Festival reminds us every year that goodness cannot be defeated by evil. In our daily life we must strive to overcome evil with good.
