The small intestine is the part of the intestines where 90% of the digestion and absorption of food occurs, the other 10% taking place in the stomach and large intestine. The main function of the small intestine is absorption of nutrients and minerals from food. Digestion involves two distinct parts.

Stomach :- The stomach contains numerous gastric glands. The muscles on the stomach wall churn and mix the food with gastric juice. It also help in propelling the food into the small intestine. The stomach releases the hydrochloric acid , which facilitates the action of protein digesting enzyme called pepsin.

Small intestine:- The inner wall of small intestine is provided with numerous villi which are richly supplied blood vessels. They increases the surface area for absorption of food. The wall of small intestine also ha intestinal glands which secretes the intestinal juices. The muscles on the intestinal wall churn and crush the food and mix it with the intestinal juices. The complete digestion of fats proteins and carbohydrates occurrs here.
