do all carbon atoms have an atomic number of 6, but some have mass number of 12 and others have mass number of 14. what is the same?

Atomic number of any element is = no. of protons

Mass no. = no. of protons + no. of neutrons

So the two carbon atoms:

Both have same number of protons i.e. 6

but  the first one has 6 neutrons ( so mass number = 6p + 6n = 12)

and the second one has 8 neutrons ( so mass number = 6p + 8n = 14)

Such atoms are called isotopes
