Do Buddhists think the big bang theory is wrong?
Answers
Answer:
— theories — are systems that describe the universe “as it is”. They are constrained from explaining why, because that question is outside of the scope of the method of observation, hypothesis, and confirmation. Whether theories take the form of a myth (religious explanation) or a mathematical formulation (scientific explanation) they are inert in the face of the question “why is the world as it is?”
Follow up Question: Yes, you are right. Like I explained, I do not believe in a grand design. The world is too imperfect for that.
But the theory of Karma, reincarnation and Nirvana rights the wrongs of this world. How is that possible? I can believe that our existence is a coincidence, but not that those supernatural phenomena are coincidences.
Response: I think you’d get a lot of interesting responses to the statement that Karma, reincarnation, and Nirvana “right the wrongs”. In my opinion, this is a misinterpretation of these concepts. But I will hold fast that this is just my opinion.
